Parents

Dear Parents:

The most important factor in whether your child will go to college is YOU! If you give your child the message that you expect him or her to go to college, you have taken the biggest step in bringing that about.

It’s never too early to being planning for college, and starting even a very modest savings account can be helpful, in part because it shows a commitment. Financial aid, most based on financial need, makes it possible for low income students to go to college. Costs vary somewhat according to whether the school is public or private. Other sources of financial aid, such as scholarships, make it possible for many students to go to the school of their choice.

There are several types of degrees students may obtain, and the admissions process varies at different schools. ICPAC has an excellent publication called Preparing Your Child for College that tells what you can do each year, beginning with the 6th grade, to prepare your student for college. (ICPAC’s website is http://icpac.indiana.edu.)

Students participating in the Directions program will receive information about colleges and careers throughout the program. We have also added a new feature for parents--the Helping Students Learn newsletter. These are brief, but very helpful, tips on helping your student do well in school. They come in a middle school or high school version.

Good luck working toward your student’s future. Remember, you are the key!
